Extra Care Housing for people with learning disabilities and/or physical disabilities

Old forum user 02/02/06 General Housing Topics

We are exploring the expansion of the Extra Care model to support people with learning disabilities and/or younger people with physical disabilities. Does anyone have any experience of such services? How, if at all, do they differ from the models of EC for older people? Have you developed schemes exclusively for different client groups or have you mixed older people and other client groups together in the same scheme? What are the pros and cons of this? How many units and what proportion of one/two bedroom units? What communal facilities have you included? Any revenue cost comparisons with other supported living models/care homes would be helpful. Any other tips/factors to consider?

Hello Liz,

I am sure that your know about our case study no.12 and our facsheet no.3; but just in case: you can find them on this Housing Lin website in the A-Z Index unde "case studies" and "factsheets".

Hello Liz, and others who view this - I am currently researching and writing a factsheet for the Housing LIN on extra-care and similar models for people with learning disabilities. I have received a number of responses to my recent e-mail to all LIN members and we hope that the factsheet will be completed and on the website by May. It will include a discussion of some of the issues, and examples of strategic approaches and provision.
