Managing quality in extra care housing schemes
I am doing a PhD research project on ‘Individuals living with dementia in extra care housing: an exploration of the practicalities and possibilities’.
A theme emerging so far is the role of quality and governance in extra care housing.
I am going to seek a small number of interviews with senior managers of housing associations, but would really appreciate a wider range of views from those of you working in extra care.
I am particularly interested in having a discussion with you about:
How does your organisation get quality at the heart of the business, and what would you say is the balance between compliance and improvement or innovation?
Do you use any frameworks, approaches or tools to support quality management in your organisation or in your extra care schemes? (if possible i'd really like to hear you describe your examples or describe your approach).
Given the complexity of your extra care partnerships, how do you assure quality for all stakeholders or partners so that residents/tenants are satisfied with the overall service they receive?
It would be good if we can get the discussion going. All information will be anonymised if I use it as part of the research findings unless you advise me you are happy to be quoted.
Hi there
Healthwatch Wokingham Borough recently interviewed people in our 3 existing extra care schemes as we have 2 new schemes opening later this year
We found an issue with people who entered extra care with mild dementia - but at this progressed there was an issue around DOLS and restricting liberty - so people were free to walk out of the facility at any time onto a main road
A copy of our report can be found here http://healthwatchwokingham.co.uk/
best of luck with your research
Nicola

Hi Nicola, that's really helpful and confirms some of my early findings which I have put in my third research newsletter on the extra care research website (see link attached).
I'll look at your report with interest, and hopefully will be able to cross reference it with my findings.
Thanks and best wishes
