Mobile Phone Signal in Extra Care Schemes

Paul Smith 12/07/12 General Housing Topics

It seems that there can be problems receiving a mobile phone signal in many extra care schemes.
Has anyone had any experience of using signal boosters?
Do they work?

Hello

One thing I should point out is that to the best of my knowledge the use of mobile telephone signal 'boosters' is illegal in the UK according to the current 'Wireless and Telegraphy' Act. - It is not illegal to sell or buy them, just to use them....

The licensing restrictions mean that only registered GSM phone service providers can utilise such technology. - I became aware of this because where I live in the Scottish Borders I have a terrible mobile signal, and considered purchasing a booster myself.

I do know that the only UK network which supplies a (legal) means of enhancing a mobile phone signal is Vodaphone (it is called the 'SureSignal'). - It requires the person to have at least 1 GSM on their network and have a Broadband connection.

Other networks such as O2 have been promising something similar for about the past 2 years, but as yet, nothing is available.

Hope this helps! If any members have any 'tecchie' queries including around Assistive Technology and Telecare, please by all means give myself or my colleague Tahir Idris a shout!
