RE: Salaries /staffing levels for extra care scheme-based staff

We have recently reviewed our staffing structure for our very sheltered service and would be interested to see how our staffing numbers and salaries compare to others. (There are concerns amongst staff that we are understaffed and underpaying). Not particularly easy to resolve given the funding restrictions on supporting people-funded posts but useful to try and benchmark. Always difficult to make direct comparisons I know but I would be really grateful if anyone out there would be willing to give me brief details about their schemes.

Very briefly:

· We have two extracare schemes (36 flats and 42 flats). Geographically quite near to each other.
· Our staff (scheme manager/scheme assistants) work 9-5 Monday to Friday and are responsible for scheme management (allocations, building maintenance etc) and support.
· The care is provided 7am-10pm by Social Services care provider.

Following our restructure, we now have:
· a fulltime scheme assistant for each scheme (providing the day-to-day housing support) and
· one scheme manager who oversees the day-to-day running of both of the schemes.

· All these posts are supporting people funded

Scheme manager salary - £19,762 - £24,060 (scale 6 to SO2)
Scheme Assistant salary (x2 posts) = £15,262 - £17,011 (scale 4)

backupstaffing (for holidays, leave etc) is provided via our staff who work in our ordinary sheltered housing schemes (both scheme manager backup and scheme assistant backup who are on the same salary levels).

Currently in the process of setting up an intermediate care service within our second scheme and looking at enhanced salary for the scheme assistant to reflect the extra responsibility that this will entail (the enhancement will not, of course, be SP funded).

As always, any replies much appreciated.

You do not indicate the county that the schemes are in. We have found that we have to pay varying rates of pay depending on the locality of the scheme. The figure mentioned would be in line with salaries in the Midlands and North but low for London and the Home Counties. Hope that helps.
