Use of electric scooters within an extra care scheme

Eileen Woods 26/04/05 General Housing Topics

We are developing our first extra care scheme and are grappling with the thorny issue of whether we allow people to use electric scooters indoors. Our scheme is not huge (59 units) but it is arranged over 5 floors. We want to help the older people who will occupy the scheme to be as independent as possible but our corridors are not as wide as we feel they need to be to allow electronic scooters to move freely around the building.
How have other dealt with this issue?

We are looking at having a policy regarding these over our Sheltered and Extra Care, however as yet I can not find anyone who has developed such a tool. Research I have undertaken on the web has shown that a few housing providers actually refuse electric buggys not supplied by health inside the scheme however I can not find copies of the documents just reference to the fact this is the case. We are all experiencing a high demand for buggy stores as these are now being used alot, can we not together develop a policy that will help us all along this process. I am happy to participate in this project if we can get it started. Many hands will make light work and also a joint approach to a major issue for most providers.
