There were 10 Knowledge and Innovation Exchange Sessions at the Housing LIN annual conference on 8 December 2011:

1 - MAKING THE FINANCIAL CASE FOR EXTRA CARE HOUSING

David Sinclair & Dylan Kneale, International Longevity Centre-UK

Using longitudinal data from 3 providers ILC-UK have undertaken a review which explores the characteristics of residents, the notion of extra care housing as a home for life, the health outcomes of residents, and patterns of health service usage of residents. In this session, we present the findings of this work. We then review the reaction to this work from policy-makers and providers as well as opening the debate to discuss the next steps needed in terms of research and action.

2 - A BETTER LIFE IN HOUSING WITH CARE

Ilona Haslewood & Jenny Pannell, Joseph Rowntree Foundation

Housing with Care promises older people independence, facilities, activities, and flexible care and support. To deliver quality services, different organisations need to work together, yet roles and responsibilities can be unclear or contested. This interactive session will consider what works and what doesn't - for residents and their families, and for organisations and their staff.

3 - PAYING FOR CARE IN LATER LIFE

John Payne, ExtraCare Charitable Trust

From research undertaken by the Extracare Charitable Trust we know that over 80% of older people are worried about the future if they should need residential or nursing care and how they would pay for it. More worryingly, only 20% say that they have a way to fund those costs! The session will give an overview of the key issues and explore an innovative approach by the ExtraCare Charitable Trust - Care for life, which seeks to use housing equity to pay for care costs.

4 - STRATEGIC COMMISSIONING AND LOCALISM

Helen Trousdale, Staffordshire County Council

An insight into Staffordshire's strategic approach to commissioning extra care housing - both the buildings themselves and the services provided within them. Includes how we have projected need for housing with care and are now planning to meet that demand. With practical tips and some of the lessons we have learned along the way.

5 - EXTRA CARE AS A COMMUNITY HUB SUPPORTED BY TELEHEALTHCARE SOLUTIONS

Kevin Alderson, Tunstall and Tayo Bilewu, Housing21

This session will cover Housing 21's innovative approach to extending the care services into the community based around their new and existing Extra Care facilities, supported by telehealthcare solutions that protect independence and provide peace of mind to clients. The session will also include an explanation of these solutions.

7 - DESIGNING FOR INCLUSION

Alan Lewis & Sarah Buchanan EVOLVE / Thomas Pocklington Trust

The findings of two research projects ('EVOLVE' and 'Extra-Care Housing for People with Sight Loss') will be presented in order to generate a discussion on the ways in which building design can enhance occupants' quality of life and enable people living in extra-care housing to maintain their independence.

8 - GETTING TO GRIPS WITH INTERGRATION

Dr Nick Goodwin, Kings Fund & Caroline Hawkings, NHF

This session will examine what is meant by the term 'integrated care', current evidence and policy directions, and discuss why it is essential as a design principle for the future of health and social care provision. It will examine ways in which housing has and will need to work with key partners to deliver it.

9 - MAXIMISING THE ROLE OF PRIVATE FUNDING TO DELIVER ECH

10 - GETTING THE BEST OUT OF THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

This talk will focus on case studies of completed high quality extra care schemes for Housing Associations using different procurement methods to successfully deliver cost certainty and control over the entire process. The case studies will show details of a number of extra care schemes which reflect best practice and incorporate all of the latest HAPPI recommendations.
