Appleby Blue Almshouse is officially declared OPEN!

Residents in Appleby Blue

Appleby Blue Almshouse is officially declared OPEN! United St Saviour’s innovative social housing development reimagines almshouses for 21st-century inner-city living, offering 57 homes for residents aged 65+ in Bermondsey.

Designed by the award-winning Witherford Watson Mann Architects, Appleby Blue sets a new standard for older people’s social housing. They’re redefining what urban living can be in later life and ensuring that intergenerational connection, community and resident support is at the heart of everything they do.

Lord Best, Co-Chair of the APPG for Housing and Care for Older People unveiled the plaque and celebrated this milestone with inspiring speeches from their Chair of Trustees Stephen Burns and their Chief Executive, Martyn Craddock.

Jeremy Porteus, CEO of Housing LIN, who attended the launch, said:

"It was a real pleasure to attend the official opening of Appleby Blue last week. It was a momentous occasion for United St Saviours Charity with HAPPI champion Lord Best, the guest of honour. The culmination of 10 years in the making when I first met the Trustees to help them shape their vision, what a joy to now celebrate the turning of that vision into a reality with local dignitaries, current and former Trustees, the dedicated staff team and key partners present and to meet the wonderful group of residents who have made this iconic scheme designed by an award-winning architect their home in later life."
