Housing LIN supports Loneliness Awareness Week 2023

Connection Matters cover

Loneliness Awareness Week 2023 (12 – 18 June), initiated by Marmalade Trust, is an important opportunity to support communities by encouraging conversations about loneliness among family, friends and colleagues. This year, we show support by bringing attention to a range of resources focusing on Loneliness, Technology and Later Living.

Utilising assistive technology can play a significant role in reducing loneliness among older people by enabling them to connect with friends and family through online messaging and video call services. Such digital connections have been shown to alleviate feelings of loneliness and enhance a sense of belonging.

One notable project, 'Technology for our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation' (TAPPI), aims to enhance the use of technology in housing and care for older adults. Through a co-production model involving 17 members of staff and tenants across six locality testbeds, the project collects personal stories from champions who share their experiences with digital technology, including its positive and negative impacts. Rosemary's story in particular reflects on the loneliness that can accompany old age but also highlights how digital gadgets help her stay connected with her family.

For a collection of resources providing information on how technology and innovations can alleviate loneliness among older people and facilitate meaningful connections, please visit our dedicated Assistive Technology webpages supported by Clarion Housing Group. This resource hub offers best practices, guidance for digital inclusion, and evaluations of current and emerging technologies to assess their impact on addressing loneliness.

And, to participate in Loneliness Awareness Week, you can use the hashtags #ConnectionMatters (opens new window) and #LonelinessAwarenessWeek (opens new window) to share your experiences of loneliness. By sharing your story, you can contribute to the momentum of the campaign and help create a more connected society.
