New Housing LIN Viewpoint looks at a pioneering intergenerational housing scheme

Housing LIN Viewpoint 99, Pioneer Intergenerational Co-Housing – The Cockaigne Houses in Hatfield, has been written for the Housing LIN by Richard Morton of RM Architects.

The Cockaigne development was built in the 60s and is an early example of co-housing and housing designed to be adaptable. In our newest Housing LIN Viewpoint, Richard Morton looks back at the project, and explores it successes.

Although not originally intended specifically as specialist housing for older people, the one-storey open plan design of the housing and their adaptability has meant that many of the occupants have continued to live there into older age.

The Viewpoint concludes by assessing the design legacy of the houses and their success as an example of co-housing and a pioneer intergenerational housing scheme.
