This week, we joined a coalition of organisations and signed up to ARCO’s letter to the Prime Minister calling on a cross-government effort to expand the supply of housing and care options in the UK.  

The Housing LIN has also released two guest blogs focussing on cohousing. The first by Town and UK Cohousing Network’s Frances Wright outlines how cohousing developments can offer greater diversity, including offering a housing alternative for adults with a learning disability. The second is by Nottingham Cohousing’s Liz Thomas in which she advocates more affordable and sustainable community-led housing to combat climate change.

And, on the research front, the Housing LIN is to be part of the IMPACT consortium, led by the University of Birmingham, to develop a brand new Centre for adult social care, which will aim to put evidence into practice to promote and maintain people’s independence and wellbeing.

Reflecting on this time 12 months ago, as Coronavirus was taking hold, we had no other choice but to cancel our high-profile annual conference in Manchester which would have been exactly a year ago today, our health and safety was paramount. Since then we have quickly come to terms with new patterns of networking, going digital and even learning a new online language, of “you’re on mute” and “next slide please”. Next paragraph please!

In our news highlights, we were delighted to have contributed an essay to ARCO’s important new report, ‘The Housing with Care Grey Paper’, which was published this week. In addition, the ADASS/TSA Commission released its report, ‘Exploring how technology can be truly integrated into adult social care’, making reference to the Housing LIN’s Dunhill Medical Trust funded TAPPI Project. You can also read about the National Residential Landlords Association’s report and accompany guidance for private landlords on making adaptations.

In particular, we draw attention to the Learning Disability and Autism Housing Network’s Charter launch yesterday. There is a useful chapter on housing.

This week, to coincide with National #IntegenerationalWeek, we published a guest blog by Laura Wigzell at Motionspot’s Fine & Able in which she offered her insights into how people are beginning to think further ahead and reassess their housing priorities and future-proof their options for later life, including multi-generational housing.

In other news, we have teamed up with Learning Disability England to produce 2 guides on choosing and finding where to live. We are looking for examples of information on ways of working that people think are good.

We also drew attention to the remarkable year of online networking curated by the Housing LIN in 2020, sharing analytics that reveal how going digital has transformed the way our learning and improvement programmes operate and contributed to the success of our new HAPPI Hour webinars and last year’s 2020 Summit. We have also seen our membership grow by a staggering 20% with over 4,500 new members registering with us. If you know of a colleague or have a staff member who you think would also benefit becoming a Housing LIN member, do encourage them sign up! Here’s the link for them to create their free account.

This week we published two new guest blogs. The first is by Sue Weston on her reflections from the recent launch of the APPG report on housing for people for dementia, and the second by Anchor Hanover's Nick Sedgwick on their partnership with Re-engage and supporting residents with their 'BeSupportive' lockdown loneliness calls which have proved a success in maintaining a vital connection with people experiencing loneliness and isolation.

In this week’s HLINks, you can also take a tour of other news and events on later life housing and independent living with regard to homes and communities, health and social care, design and technology, planning matters and more, including two new reports, relevant for our sector. The first of these is a report by the Centre for Ageing Better, Getting our homes in order: How England’s homes are failing us. It explains how the majority of people have spent more time at home than ever before and highlights the impact of poor living conditions on people’s physical and mental health. The second report by London based Octavia Hill Housing Association, 'Better lives for older people’, identifies the effectiveness of outreach, befriending and activity engagement services in reducing the experience of loneliness and isolation amongst older residents.

And, of course, with the Budget on Wednesday and Covid in mind, there was disappointment that there was nothing specific set out for adult social care in the Chancellor’s statement. While there was news of the extension of Stamp Duty (something the Housing LIN had called for), there was nothing specific to stimulate the market for purpose-built housing for older people for rent or for sale.

To coincide with our latest HAPPI Hour session yesterday afternoon on Community-led housing and building resilient communities, we published two new resources from the Housing LIN. The first is a Viewpoint by Jim Hudson at the LSE and researcher partners from a variety of Universities entitled, ‘What collaborative housing offers in a pandemic: Evidence from 18 communities in England and Wales’. And staying in Wales, the second is a guest blog by Claire White at the Wales Cooperative Centre who has written about their upcoming research findings on the values and experiences of cooperative living during lockdown.

The first of these is a report by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, ‘Coming Home: Tackling the housing crisis together’. This week we have been consumed by the launch of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Housing and Care for Older People Inquiry report on housing and living with dementia. Over 220 people attended the online event chaired by Lord Best and Peter Aldous MP and hosted by the Housing LIN. We were all inspired by author Wendy Mitchell, who had shared her own experience of dementia in her evidence to the Inquiry, as she told those watching, “if you get the housing right for people with dementia, you get it right for so many others”. 

Written by the Housing LIN’s co-dementia lead, Katey Twyford, and Chief Executive, Jeremy Porteus, Housing for people with dementia – are we ready? is packed full of top tips, good practice and policy and funding recommendations, including reframing the original 10 HAPPI design principles for dementia-readiness.

In this week’s round up of other news from the Housing LIN, we also released a guest blog by Tetlow King Planning’s Managing Director, John Sneddon, on the recent government consultation so a National Draft Design Code and proposed reforms to the planning system

In this week’s round up, we lead on C&C’s new report on the experience of isolation and loneliness amongst their residents under lockdown. The research with 250 of the residents found that one in eight over-55s regularly feel lonely and isolated during COVID-19. We also released a new guest blog by Share and Care Homeshare’s Caroline Cooke on homesharing for intergenerational living.

And, if you work in retirement villages or extra care housing, St Monica Trust have extended the deadline of our joint national RE-COV survey to Monday, 8 February. With a few days to go, we are keen to hear how your extra care housing or retirement villages fared during the pandemic last year.
