Promoting Independence joins the Housing LIN’s family of sponsors!
We are delighted to announce that Promoting Independence, an occupational therapy practice based in Cardiff operating UK-wide, is a new sponsor of the Housing LIN and exclusive sponsor of the Housing LIN’s occupational therapist (OT) webpages on our Design Hub.
Their core programmes provide professionals involved in assessment with information and training to raise their awareness and confidence with adaptations and equipment for the home; they also run an independent assessment service that specialises in working with housing providers.
Promoting Independence run a year-round programme of one-day regional events called OTAC (OT Adaptations Conferences) which combine a day of practical talks and workshops with an opportunity to try out equipment. Attendance is free and their current schedule can be viewed here (opens new window), or the full list of dates and venues of upcoming OTAC events is as followed:
- OTAC Cambridge (opens new window) – 14th June at The Hilton Cambridge City Centre (opens new window)
- OTAC Chester (opens new window)– 13th September at The Queen by Best Western (opens new window)
- OTAC Kent (opens new window)– 8th November at The Spa Hotel (opens new window)
- OTAC Watford (opens new window) – 29th November at The Hilton, Watford (opens new window)
- OTAC Cardiff (opens new window) – 13th December at The Vale Resort (opens new window)
This year they are launching a range of accredited Trusted Assessor courses: the team leading this development devised the national qualifications and until recently ran the UK’s leading programme. The all-new courses include a unique monthly workshop for accredited learners designed to enable them to keep up to date.
Stuart Barrow, Founder and Managing Director of Promoting Independence, says:
“We’re excited to be working with the Housing LIN. We see an opportunity to contribute as Occupational Therapists working with their members to share knowledge and help improve practice. Through our work, we are exposed to end users, product vendors and professionals across the UK and we’re keen to share the insights we gain from this and to learn from members of the Housing LIN.”
Jeremy Porteus, CEO at Housing LIN, added:
“Occupational therapists' input is crucial in designing housing for older people that promotes their independence, safety, and quality of life. That’s why we’re thrilled to collaborate with Promoting Independence as a corporate sponsor of the Housing LIN and an exclusive sponsor of our OT webpages, as part of our wider Design Hub. Their generous support empowers us to champion occupational therapists as advisors on how to prioritise and incorporate the best aspects of accessible design guidelines into new builds and refurbishments, ensuring that older adults can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and fulfilling living environment.”
Occupational therapists can be an invaluable resource when involved early in new build or refurbishment projects. Consulting with OTs at the outset is an excellent way to ensure accessible design and adaptability to changing needs in the long term. There are several ways in which OTs contribute to designing housing for older people, such as conducting functional assessments, adapting living spaces, promoting engagement in meaningful activities, preventing falls, and recommending equipment and assistive technology.
