The John Morden Centre - designed by Mæ architects for almshouse charity Morden College in South East London - has been named winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize 2023.

The stunning, modern day care and medical facility for older people was added to an existing 17th century Grade One-listed retirement community and care home for 300 senior residents in Blackheath

Described as "architecturally uplifting", the new Centre is a series of red brick "pavilions" housing, care and social spaces, stitched together by a central timber "cloister" to become the new "social heart" of the Centre. They accommodate a health centre for residents, social spaces, refectory, art and crafts room, shop and hairdresser.

The judges commented:

"this building provides comfort and warmth, with thoughtful features designed to prevent isolation. It illustrates how buildings can themselves be therapeutic – supporting care and instilling a sense of belonging. Great architecture orients people so they can thrive, and this building is exemplary at achieving exactly that.”

Speaking to the Riba Journal, Mæ's Alex Ely said:

"there is a real need for better housing for older people. If older people can live more independent, fulfilled lives for longer then there are arguably less social service costs."
