Revised National Planning Policy Framework now out
The government has published its revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). It sets out the government’s planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied. The new NPPF keeps the reference (para 63) to assessing housing needs for older people and that this should be reflected in local planning policies. Accompanying planning practice guides highlight measures to undertake this.
There is also reference to planning affordable home ownership and local expectations of at least 10% (para 66). However, there are exemptions in applying this including where the provision of specialist, purpose-built accommodation is provided.
Lastly, while not specifically on housing older people or planning for age-friendliness, there are sections on ‘Promoting Healthy and Safe places’ (paras 96-107) and ‘Achieving well-designed and beautiful places (paras 131-141).
