TAPPI Cast – 11 August 2023
Welcome to TAPPI Cast, our weekly update on the 'Technology for our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation' (TAPPI) project which aims to improve the way technology is used in housing and care for older people. Includes updates from our 6 Testbeds, Resources and Events of interest.
Updates from our Testbeds:
Lindsey Millen and Elisabeth Wilson visited Dairy View on Monday, 7 August to support Dr Reyhaneh Shojaei, Research Associate, Cambridge Centre for Housing & Planning Research to complete the final evaluation for the TAPPI pilot.
Vicki Cornish - whose Personal Story we published a few weeks ago - was unavailable to see Rey face-to-face but sent the below:
“Thank you so much, having the Alexa set up with the lights has been amazing and so useful. I'm trying with podcasts since the digital volunteer visit and love listening to the Archers.
“Alexa has improved my pain a little as instead of struggling and twisting to do everyday tasks I can just speak out. I am now hoping to have the tv, firestick and curtains in the bedroom added and microwave in the kitchen also. I for one am very grateful for the support and knowledge that you all have shared with me.
“You have all been so kind and very helpful, it is amazing what a difference everything has made.”

POLICY - Care in the Digital Age: Delivery Plan 2023-24 (opens new window)
Published by the Scottish Government on 4th August 2023, the national delivery plan describes activities supporting Health Boards, HSCPs, local authorities, primary care, social care, social work, and care providers to offer new or improved services, whether through improved systems and infrastructure, or access to digital services.
SURVEY - Share your experience of digital exclusion
The use of digital technology across society and our public services has accelerated significantly in recent years, which has created barriers for older people who are not online trying to access services and information, as well as other kinds of amenities.
The Housing LIN is delighted to support this survey commissioned by The Older People's Commissioner for Wales seeking your experiences of digital exclusion. Please submit your response by Friday, 1st September 2023.
From GP appointments to railway tickets to cashless parking, key services in the UK are being delivered digitally. For many, the convenience is a tangible benefit. But there are appreciable downsides for the millions of people who find it difficult to carry out basic day-to-day functions in a world that assumes everyone is comfortable online. In the name of progress, the danger is that a wall is erected between wider society and a group that tends to live outside England’s south‑east and be older, poorer and more vulnerable.
