TAPPI Cast – 2 October 2023

TAPPI logo

Welcome to TAPPI Cast, our weekly update on the 'Technology for our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation' (TAPPI) project which aims to improve the way technology is used in housing and care for older people. Includes updates from our 6 Testbeds, Resources and Events of interest.

(opens new window)As we enter the last few months of the TAPPI project, the September edition of TSA's Industry Magazine (opens new window), TEC Voice provides an update on our findings so far.

It’s vital for TAPPI to have life beyond this implementation programme. To ensure the value and legacy of the project, we’re working on a range of tools and resources and we’re speaking to leaders in housing, health and care systems about applying our learnings at scale.

Updates from our Testbeds

Feedback from customers indicates communication is important to them. As part of the TAPPI project, Platform Housing recently installed a new digital touchscreen noticeboard to address this by using technology. It can be used to display upcoming events, photographs and videos, the latest Platform news and so much more.

Co-production Works visited Dairy View for the final time to ask residents if and how technology has made a difference to them over the year of the pilot. Residents fed back and highlighted the highs and lows of some of the technology they had tested.

One resident felt some of the alarm devices were just too sensitive and went off far toom much as at the slightest movement; another resident wanted devices to look and feel like everyday items so friends and family could not tell. Some residents welcomed the challenge of continual learning and others felt they were happy with what they knew and their daily routine.

Tony, resident champion at Dairy View commented

“technology-enabled care is very unique to the individual and their health and care needs, everyone is different and one size does not fit all. It has been good to try care devices, some have worked well and other items have been returned as they have just not worked well.”

On another matter, one resident, who is 89 years old has successfully mastered using a tablet, ordering her shopping on-line and ordering items through Amazon. She commented:

“with the help of Paul, Abilitynets volunteer - who has the patience of a saint - I’ve been supported to learn new digital skills. I will not be beaten and enjoy taking the time to learn new things.”

Paul, Abilitynet volunteer commented:

“Working with the Dairy view residents has been a rewarding journey of exploration in the world of technology. During each session, we’ve been enthusiastically learning and embracing new digital skills while having a great time.”

Paul will continue to visit Dairy View each month to support a drop-in surgery where residents can ask for help, support and guidance.

Following the publication of three new personal stories from TAPPI Champions last week, Southend Echo has featured the story of Paul Summers, a tenant at the Southend Care testbed.

In this article, Paul shares his experience of how technology has empowered him to lead an independent life.

New innovation programme exploring how technology can enable care at home and in the community (opens new window)

The Health Foundation has selected 10 teams to be part of its exciting new £2 million innovation programme that will explore how technology can enable new approaches to care at home and in the community.

The Tech for Better Care (opens new window) programme will support these 10 teams from across the UK to develop, test and pilot promising new ideas and approaches to care over approximately 18 months.

The teams will develop approaches to care that focus on the caring and enabling relationships needed between those who deliver care and those who receive care, and on care that is proactive in supporting people to live a better and more independent life where possible.
