The Independent Commission on the Future of Council Housing in Southwark

The Independent Commission on the Future of Council Housing in Southwark was formally launched in February 2012 and is being chaired by Jan Luba QC. By September 2012, the commission will

  • Explore options for the future financing, ownership and operation of Southwark's housing stock beyond 2015/16 (when the current five year investment programme comes to an end);
  • Examine proposals and make recommendations for an investment strategy, for up to thirty years, that is sustainable, affordable and breaks the current cycle of an escalating demand for diminishing resources.

The Commission's first task is to get the views and perspectives of tenants and leaseholders. One of the ways they intend to gather the views of key stakeholders and other interested parties is through a 'call for evidence', which outlines some of the main questions and issues that the Commission will be examining.

This call for evidence is open to anyone who wishes to offer views on the future of council housing in Southwark. Evidence from organisations would also be welcome. More information can be found at www.southwarkhousingcommission.com (opens new window)

The commission is aiming to conclude the consultation by mid May and publish the findings in Autumn 2012.
