The system of exempt accommodation is "a complete mess", says new House of Commons Committee report
The current system of exempt accommodation, a type of supported housing that is used to house a range of people with support needs, is a ‘complete mess’ that is failing too many residents and local communities at the expense of the taxpayer, says the cross-party Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (LUHC) Committee in the 'Exempt Accommodation Third Report of Session 2022–23' report.
Ian Copeman, Housing LIN Business Director said:
"The Housing LIN welcomes the recognition from the Inquiry into Exempt Accommodation that exempt accommodation is an important component of supported housing and that there are many good providers. However, we also welcome the Inquiry's recommendation that there is a need for national standards with powers for local authorities (and new burdens funding for councils) to enforce such standards.
The Inquiry also importantly recommends that funding for support for people who live in exempt accommodation should be provided separately. The Housing LIN looks forward to continuing to work with our colleagues in local authorities and supported housing providers, as well as other partners, to support improvement in exempt accommodation provision."
