United St Saviour’s Appleby Blue Triumphs at National Housing Design Awards 2024
In a remarkable achievement at the National Housing Design Awards 2024, Appleby Blue (opens new window) has been honored with both the HAPPI Award (sponsored by the Housing LIN) and the prestigious Blue Riband Winner Award. The project, developed by United St Saviour's (a sponsor of the Housing LIN), stood out among 13 other distinguished winners from across the housing sector.
Gareth Capner, Chair of the Housing Design Awards, expressed his congratulations to United St Saviour's, highlighting Appleby Blue’s exceptional design and contribution to the field. In his final appearance as chair after 15 years, Capner paid tribute to the enduring impact of the HAPPI report, which emphasises high-quality housing design for later life.
Addressing the audience, Capner acknowledged Lord Richard Best, a key figure in the development of the HAPPI report, saying
“Schemes of this quality have their roots in the recommendations of the HAPPI report. Richard, you have made the prospect of needing to move late in life less worry for all of us.”
Martyn Craddock, CEO of Appleby Blue, said:
“We are incredibly proud and honoured that United St. Saviour’s Charity has been recognized with both the HAPPI Award and the prestigious Winner of Winners Award at this year’s Housing Design Awards. Having Appleby Blue acknowledged in this way, with the award presented by Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook, is a testament to our belief that good design should be accessible to everyone. Our residents are at the heart of everything we do, and everyone who has seen the video produced by the Housing Design Awards, or visited our almshouse, can see this. We hope Appleby Blue will serve as an exemplar model, inspiring others to improve the national provision of social housing for older people in cities across the UK. We look forward to seeing more homes of this standard built in the future.”
Jeremy Porteus, CEO of Housing LIN, commented:
"We are thrilled to learn that Housing LIN sponsor, United St Saviour’s Appleby Blue has triumphed at the National Housing Design Awards 2024. They have won both the HAPPI Award—of which we are proud sponsors—and the prestigious Blue Riband Winner Award. This accolade highlights their dedication to creating innovative and inspiring housing solutions that significantly enhance residents' quality of life and their community connections. We are incredibly proud of their achievement, having been involved in the iconic development from inception to completion. We were also honoured to host our Future Leaders meeting there, which included a tour of this groundbreaking social housing project that reimagines the almshouse concept for contemporary HAPPI-inspired urban ageing!”
We were delighted to feature Appleby Blue in this Inspirational Achievement feature, showcasing its outstanding role in advancing new housing delivery standards and setting a benchmark for future developments.
We are also delighted to see PRP Architects, also a Housing LIN sponsor, receive the Homes England Exemplar Award at the Housing Design Awards 2024 for Knoll House (opens new window)!
