Description of Scheme
The scheme is available to people aged 60 years and over and to people 55 years and over with an assessed care need or housing need.
The scheme does not have a specific user group and has a mix of Tenants who have high, medium and low needs personal care needs. Care and support has been provided to people with dementia, physical disabilities and learning disabilities.
The scheme was built on a piece of land which was triangular in shape. The architect designed a crescent shaped building to make use of space available. This also allowed the entrance, communal facilities and lift to be centrally placed within the building thereby minimise corridor lengths.
The shape has also allowed for a wide variety of flat shapes including some with a broad frontage open plan design particularly suitable for people with physical disabilities.
All flats have an emergency call system which can support the full range of telecare based on tenant's individual needs.
Some tenants attend the local community centre which is situated next door for their lunch, and other activities. A restaurant service is currently being developed within the scheme which will allow tenants and members of the community to purchase freshly cooked meals and be a spring board for a full range of social activities.
Where Is It?
Located 2 miles away from the town centre, Richmond Hill is an ethnically diverse area which has a mixture of victorian terraces, new social housing, high rise flats alongside an industrial area. There has been a great deal of investment in new housing in the area as the industrial use declines and older properties are replaced.

The need for increased extra care provision was identified by Leeds City Council and East Leeds PCT. There was no extra care provision in this area which had a higher than average proportion of older people and of those a higher than average proportion with acute needs.
A subsequent successful bid for Department of Health funding for Extra Care Housing was made in 2008.
