Kingsway Site
Blackburn,
Housing 21
Description of Scheme
The scheme was developed on the site of a former HFE and a Sunday school building that was used for Day care that was no longer fit for purpose. The site provided operational opportunity to develop an extra care scheme close to the town centre.
The scheme has a focus on health (particularly dementia), carers and facilities for Christian and Islamic worship. The scheme has a multi-faith dimension to encourage understanding, diversity and community cohesion. Through this opportunity lasting resources based upon good quality, independent housing services with access to 24 hour care and support able to underpin the preventative agenda is provided. The Carers service and the United Reformed Church has dedicated space and the innovative design to encourage a range of services in the scheme to use the building to its maximum potential.
There is accommodation for up to 8 residents with dementia.
Where Is It?
Wensley Fold ward is the second most deprived ward in Lancashire. The area is mainly 1960's Council estate with low rise flats. There is a commercial area to the south of the development providing a range of shops including two small supermarkets.

Useful Local Statistics
The demographics show that by 2025 the total population in the Borough will reach over 150,000 with the largest percentage increases being in the group aged 75-79 (39%) and those aged 85 and over (34%). The combination of greater demand for services and more age related health ailments will create the need for more extra care services to address quite complex needs including higher levels of dementia, people with limiting long term conditions and emerging groups such as Learning disabilities.
