Housing gives people with Dementia new independance

Location: St Helens, Merseyside

Issue: The belief that people with moderate dementia could regain independence and skills living in extra care housing.

Action: People with moderate dementia have moved into an eight flat unit, managed by Villages Housing Association with support and domiciliary care from Methodist Homes for the Aged. Social services initially promoted the scheme, but it is now wholly run by the independent sector providers.

Outcome: Many of the tenants have regained dormant skills as they are encouraged to do as much as possible for themselves, and developed more vigour and dignity as a result. Their better quality of life has also improved their relationships with family and informal carers.

Organisations Involved: St Helens Council, independent care providers
