The rights of older people inquiry report

The rights of older people COVER

This inquiry report from the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee makes a number of recommendations to government around the overarching themes of tackling ageist stereotypes, overcoming digital exclusion, enforcing older people’s rights and improved governance arrangements.

Of particular interest to Housing LIN members will be the following recommendations:

  • Government to commission and fund the Equality and Human Rights Commission to review the effectiveness of protections against age discrimination provided by the Equality Act and Public Sector Equality Duty in England (this would include access to housing and digital inclusion).
  • The Government should bring forward a refreshed Digital Inclusion Strategy. The Strategy should have a detailed focus on the needs of digitally excluded older people, and
  • as listed in our Top 5 Wishes for 2025, the Government should undertake an evaluation to consider the duties, powers, and resources for the establishment of a Commissioner for Older People in England and whether there should a single Commissioner for England or a network of regional Commissioners. The report also cites the Housing & Ageing Alliance 15-point manifesto and its call for a Commissioner.

The report was published on 19 February 2025 and the Government has two months to respond.
