Extra Care Housing for People with Dementia

This week we published a series of linked Housing LIN Viewpoints on the subject of extra care housing for people with dementia. Written for us by Dr Katey Twyford, and based on research carried out for a Doctoral Research Study, these three viewpoints look at assessing when extra care housing is suitable for people with dementia, and how provision can be improved.

The first viewpoint discusses when extra care housing is an appropriate choice for someone with dementia, and what factors might trigger someone living with dementia in extra care housing to move out.

The second viewpoint considers an extra care scheme as a social world and how the different social groups in extra care housing can help or hinder someone living well in extra care housing.

The third and final viewpoint reviews how extra care housing operators can approach quality management to keep residents and tenants at the heart of their service within a complex regulatory environment.

Based on original research carried out with service users and service providers, the viewpoints include policy and practice recommendations for improving care provision for people with dementia.
