HLINKs - Housing LIN's weekly update at your fingertips

Welcome to  #Jeremytalks and our must-read weekly bulletin, HLINks, week-ending Friday, 29 September 2021.

This is where you can take a tour of relevant resources and events on later life housing and independent living with regard to homes and communities, health and social care, design and technology, dementia, planning matters and more.

Well, what a week of news it has been! While the nation may have been fixed on the Chancellor's spending plans, the highlight for me has been the launch of the TAPPI Inquiry report. Over 260 people registered to join us on Tuesday's HAPPI Hour when we were pleased to share the ‘Big Insights’ from the 6-months drawing on Panel Members and witnesses to highlight the key findings and recommendations for a future TAPPI Framework that is co-designed with citizens and co-produced with Industry.

Ahead of the launch, we were also pleased to publish a guest blog by Tim Barclay, CEO of Appello, reflecting on the use of technology in specialist housing and explaining why they fully support the TAPPI Inquiry Report.

Then yesterday, we announced the programme for December's Housing LIN Virtual Summit 2021, our 10th anniversary celebration. We have over 40 speakers joining us over 5 days, week commencing Monday, 6 December 2021 to share the latest in thought-leadership, highlighting product and service innovations, as well as bringing you cutting-edge research and practice development for the UK’s housing and care sector. Our A Festival of Ideas also coincides with the 2nd HAPPI Awareness Week, celebrating the benefits of designing care-ready accommodation and age-friendly housing services. More on this next week!

We also highlight a range of items that we think will be of interest to you, including:

Looking ahead, our final HAPPI Hour session of our autumn series takes place on Tuesday, 2 November, ‘From Moving on to Moving In’. We will be focussing on different approaches to 'rightsizing' and later life moves from both a range of personal and practitioner perspectives.

New publication: The TAPPI Inquiry Report

TAPPI-Cover-FINAL-highres-160

Chaired by Professor Roy Sandbach OBE and funded by the Dunhill Medical Trust, the Housing LIN's 6 month TAPPI Inquiry Panel heard from people with lived experience about the technological opportunities and barriers faced in their lives, especially during COVID. These have helped shape the Panel’s ‘Big Insights’ and have won widespread support for developing an overarching TAPPI Framework to set out what ‘good must looks like.

The Panel’s ‘Big Insights’ are underpinned by ten core principles to build technology into housing in a way that improves life for our ageing population.

The Housing LIN now looks forward to progressing to Phase Two of the TAPPI project to pilot the principles.

Tim Barclay

Ahead of Tuesday's launch, Tim Barclay, CEO at Appello, reflects on the use of technology in specialist housing and explains why they support the TAPPI Inquiry Report.

Tim, who also gave evidence to the TAPPI Inquiry, says that by really considering the wider influences within specialist housing, from property design to the environment and customers to desired outcomes, technology can really be embedded into specialist housing to make monumental change to the living experience.

Future Leaders Programme – Final calls for applications 5th Nov at 5pm

thirteen group logo

With thanks to Thirteen Group’s support, we want the new network to be a small, diverse and dynamic community of younger, early career individuals.

We are now looking for up to 10 committed people with an interest in housing for an ageing population to be part of our second intake.

This is a fantastic and valuable opportunity for successful applicants to learn through the lived experience of a selection of industry leaders about what/who inspired or influenced them and what qualities they looked out for to enable them to then develop their own leadership styles and credentials.

Applications close on Friday 5th November 2021 at 5pm.

The Budget and housing with care

The Budget image

While there was a welcomed £640m allocation to end homelessness and rough sleeping, Wednesday's Budget offered nothing for the Housing with Care or the wider specialist/supported housing or adult social care sectors.

ADASS reflected: "… the additional £1.6bn a year in grant funding for councils is welcome, it will do little more than meet the costs of the rise in the national living wage for care workers from next April."

ARCO's Michael Voges commented: "Today's budget represents yet another missed opportunity for social care.

And the new CEO of the Centre for Ageing Better, Carole Easton stated: "while the chancellor delivered an 'age of optimism' budget, we need more optimism around age. Given our ageing population, we need to see greater investment in prevention and a much stronger focus on tackling inequalities to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy a good later life, now and in the future. "

We await to see if there are any further funding announcements in the small prints to come.
