HLINKs - Housing LIN's weekly update at your fingertips

Welcome to #Jeremytalks and our must-read weekly bulletin, HLINks, week-ending Friday, 12 November 2021

This is where you can take a tour of relevant resources and events on later life housing and independent living with regard to homes and communities, health and social care, design and technology, dementia, planning matters and more.

For example, this week, we published two Housing LIN guest blogs. The first follows the HAPPI Hour ‘From Moving on to Moving In’, is by Gail Lincoln, former researcher and lecturer in Health Science at the University of Westminster who reflects on her own research on wellbeing differences in older 'Movers' and 'Non Movers’. The second, by Julia Godwin, Business Development at Sparko TV, follows the recent launch of the TAPPI Inquiry Report, and reviews why Sparko TV support the 10 TAPPI principles.

With 3 weeks to go before this year’s Housing LIN Virtual Summit, we have been sharing more information on the great line-up of ‘IdeaTalks’ showcasing the latest in thought-leadership, highlighting product and service innovations, as well as bringing you cutting-edge research and practice development for the UK’s housing with care sector.

With the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in mind, we would like to remind you of our recent case study on Melfield Gardens, 100% affordable homes for Phoenix Community Housing that combine intergenerational living with HAPPI principles whilst targeting a highly sustainable Passivhaus standard.

We also highlight a range of items that we think will be of interest to you, including:

In this blog post, Julia recognises that we are now living in a 'Hybrid' world with a general preference to mix digital and face to face interaction, and further explains what this means for Sparko TV.

The Cost of Poor Housing in England

The cost of poor housing in England cover

This report, published by Building Research Establishment (BRE), finds poor housing in England could be costing the National Health Service (NHS) £1.4billion a year in treatment bills. This rises to £18.5 billion p.a. when wider societal costs are included (long term care, mental health etc.). The new report recommends that further research is undertaken to inform a full 30 year cost-benefit analysis of the impact of improving poor housing in England.

DHSC Winter Plan

Scottish Flag

Building on last year’s adult social care winter plan, here the Government sets out the key elements of national support available for the social care sector for winter 2021 to 2022, as well as the principal actions to take for local authorities, NHS organisations and social care providers across all settings, including those in the voluntary and community sector.

By working together, that Government states that we will ensure that high-quality, safe, and timely care is provided to everyone who needs it, while we continue to protect people who need care, their carers and the social care workforce from COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses.

Digital Health and Care Strategy

This is the refreshed strategy which sets out how the Scottish Government will work together to improve the care and wellbeing of people in Scotland by making best use of digital technologies in the design and delivery of services, in a way, place and time that works best for them.

As COVID-19 has accelerated the pace of digital transformation, it has also highlighted the challenges faced by people who find themselves excluded from the digital world. This strategy therefore builds on the progress that has been made to date, whilst taking account of the opportunities and challenges brought about by the changed landscape that we now live in.
