HLINks - Housing LIN's weekly update at your fingertips

All the news you need and more.

Friday, 22nd April 2022

Welcome to #Jeremytalks and our must-read weekly bulletin, HLINks.

Readers will be sad to learn that Care and Repair England have announced that after 36 years they are closing at the end of April. In response, I tweeted“This is such sad news. You’ve been part of my professional upbringing since the start. I am proud to have served as a past Trustee and collaborate over the years on policy and practice developments for better housing quality, decent homes and information and advice services for older people.”

In this week's HLINks, we also draw attention to our most recent Housing LIN guest blog by Paul Willis, Associate Professor at the University of Bristol’s School for Policy Studies and Brian Beach, Research Fellow at University College London and formerly at ILC-UK. You can also sign up to hear from Paul about The DICE Project at our upcoming HAPPI Hour - Diversity in Care Environments: A better understanding of social inclusion of older people on Tuesday, 3 May 2022.

We also remind readers that the deadline to supply evidence to the current APPG on Housing and Care for Older People Inquiry‘Making retirement living affordable: the role of shared ownership housing’ is 4 May 2022.

And remember, you can also apply to become one of the Dunhill Medical Trust TAPPI2 “testbeds”. The deadline for submissions is 16 May 2022.

Housing schemes for older people helping to alleviate loneliness

DICE logo 160pxs

Co-published with CaCHE, this Housing LIN guest blog is written by Paul Willis, Associate Professor at the University of Bristol's School for Policy Studies and Brian Beach, Research Fellow at University College London and formerly at ILC-UK.

As members of the Diversity In Care Environments (DICE) Team, they reflect on the findings from the three-year study into the ways in which housing with care and support schemes support the inclusion of older residents from different social groups and backgrounds.

They reveal how and why these schemes do indeed play an important role in alleviating loneliness in later life and what this means for housing providers and resident.

Care and Repair England to close

Care and Repair logo

We are saddened to report that the housing charity and campaign organisation on older people’s housing, Care and Repair England, have announced that after 36 years they are closing at the end of the month.

We received notification that “in a challenging operating environment, raising funds for Care & Repair England’s efforts to work with older people, to identify their housing difficulties and pioneer solutions, to highlight the housing experiences and wishes of those who are marginalised, has become ever more difficult, and it is with great regret that the decision to close has been taken."

New House of Lords Adult Social Care Committee Inquiry issues call for evidence

This Committee has launched an inquiry and published a call which seeks evidence of the ‘invisibility’ of adult social care, in particular “lifting the veil” on the impact for people with care needs and carers. It also seeks to explore how people are meaningfully involved in the design and delivery of care services.

Deadline for submissions is 27 May 2022.
