HLINks - Catch up with the Housing LIN
Let's catch up!
Friday, 16 September 2022
Welcome to #Jeremytalks and this week's HLINks.
This week, we drew attention to a breifing paper published in partnership with Appello, one of the UK’s leading technology enabled care service (TECS) providers, that paints an alarming picture for how the sector is reacting to the requirement to upgrade services.
On Wednesday, we celebrated this year's Scottish Housing Day. To coincide, the Chartered Institute of Housing Scotland published a report that sets out the case for new, more ambitious cross-tenure housing standards but also notes the need for government to have a key role in funding these new higher standards.
And, in other news, I hit 4,500 followers on Twitter! Thank you for all the support.
Lastly, we are always keen to hear stories, receive your good practice case studies and thought leadership. If you would like to contribute, email us at: comms@housinglin.org.uk
Stay connected, stay curious!

Digital Telecare: How ready are we for the digital switch?
An estimated 18,750 specialist housing developments for older and vulnerable communities could still be without digital telecare and warden call services by 2025.
These are the findings of the ‘Digital Telecare: How ready are we for the digital switch?’ briefing paper, published by Appello, one of the UK’s leading technology enabled care service (TECS) providers, and the Housing LIN.

Smoking and social housing: Supporting residents addressing inequalities
This report, published in May 2022, is a collaboration between Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and the Housing LIN. It outlines the case for reducing rates of smoking in the social housing sector as part of social landlords’ health and wellbeing activity and the action needed to achieve this.
This report comes at a time when many residents are very concerned about the cost-of-living crisis. The report therefore makes several recommendations for social housing providers, local government public health teams and the NHS and central government.

A few interesting resources related to design and technology for people with learning disabilities:
The HfT Virtual Smart House provides an interactive and visually appealing representation of what technology is available to make people’s lives easier at home. Devices shown in the tool are for tasks that are often taken for granted like automatic curtain openers which provide a useful addition to someone’s home.
In addition to this, the Care Tech Review: Learning Disability report by Future Care Capital and Newmarket Strategy gives a detailed look at what the criteria are for ensuring well designed assistive technology and the types of technology at home that are available to people with learning disabilities.
