HLINks - Catch up with the Housing LIN

Let's catch up!

Friday, 23 September 2022

Welcome to #Jeremytalks and this week's HLINks.

Celebrating #AccessibleHomesWeek, we drew attention to a range of Accessible Design resources that show how good design can maintain health and wellbeing and help people adapt to changes that may be due to aging.

We were pleased to publish a new guest blog by Tunstall Healthcare's Corporate Sales Director, Sarah Watts revealing how telecare is leading a retirement revolution.

And, continuing the telecare theme, we hosted our first HAPPI Hour webinar of the Autumn / Winter series. Looking at the sectors readiness for the digital switch, we were joined by Tim Barclay, CEO at Appello, Steve Sadler, Head of Tech Strategy at TSA & Dr Kate Hamblin, Research Fellow at the Centre for International Research on Care, Labour and Equalities at Sheffield University. Missed it? You can now rewatch here

We are also delighted that Carlton Dene, Westminster City Council’s flagship extra care scheme, took home the HAPPI Award at the Housing Design Awards. We look forward to featuring the winning entry in association with Levitt Bernstein at our forthcoming HAPPI Hour webinar.

Lastly, we are always keen to hear stories, receive your good practice case studies and thought leadership. If you would like to contribute, email us at: comms@housinglin.org.uk

Stay connected, stay curious!

With the youngest Baby Boomers turning 60 by 2024, the most comfortable, competent and confident tech users are heading into retirement, with the likelihood that they’ll also live for longer. Meeting this tech-savvy generation’s accommodation expectations will be essential for people working on retirement living specifications – and will need a shift in mindset.

Sarah Watts, Corporate Sales Director at Tunstall Healthcare, explains how including the future user in planning technology in retirement housing is the logical solution.

As announced in July 2022, Housing LIN is delighted to be an industry partner in a new research project on loneliness in ageing population tackled through smart clothing and furniture.

The DELONELINESS team are looking to speak to people who have experienced loneliness since reaching the age of 65. Their goal is to develop a technology to measure when someone is lonely, to make sure people get the right support at the right time. Interviews can be conducting in person or online, and you will be reimbursed for your time (£30). If you have any questions, or are interested in taking part, please email: deloneliness@kcl.ac.uk

Consultancy

Adaptations without delay

The purpose of this guide, commissioned by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, was to address delays in the delivery of all types of adaptations across all tenures that occur when people receive a disproportionate response to their need for an adaptation.

Delays in installing adaptations can increase the risk of health and social care needs developing or increasing.

Published in early September to coincide with this month World Alzheimer's Month, 'Light Up My Life' research results show how beneficial music is to people living with dementia, including reduction in anxiety and depression, as well as an increase in happiness, calmness, confidence and social interaction.

The 'Light Up My Life' campaign follows on from the release of the Power of Music Report, co-authored by Music for Dementia and UK Music, earlier this year which sets out a framework for how we can harness the power of music to support health and wellbeing, particularly for those living with dementia.
