HLINks - Catch up with the Housing LIN

Let's catch up!

Friday, 30 September 2022

Welcome to #Jeremytalks and this week's HLINks.

This week we were pleased to announce that West Waddy Archadia (WWA) continues its support of the Housing LIN through sponsorship of its Planning Homes and Communities for Older People webpages.

On Tuesday, we published a new report commissioned by LGA and written by Ian Copeman and Lois Beech from the Housing LIN on how councils are planning, developing and delivering a range of housing opportunities and options to meet the needs of an ageing population.

I was also pleased to attend Wednesday's joint event by TSA, West Midlands ADASS, Housing LIN and TLAP in Birmingham. A key message echoed by all speakers was that houses are ‘fixed’ places, but people’s lives change all the time; housing needs to be inclusive, accessible and adaptable. As my first in-person event in a long time, it was delightful to see the networking unfolding in a room full of passionate individuals. See what I said over on Twitter

On Saturday 1st October, we celebrate International Day for Older Persons by sharing a case study and blog post by Maria Brenton, Senior Cohousing Ambassador at UK Cohousing, on the UK’s first senior cohousing community, High Barnet.

And a quick reminder that we were pleased to kick off the HAPPI Hour series with last week's session on digital telecare! If you missed it, you can watch it here. The engagement and feedback was fantastic and has welcomely set the tone for our forthcoming HAPPI Hour webinars.

Lastly, we are always keen to hear stories, receive your good practice case studies and thought leadership. If you would like to contribute, email us at: comms@housinglin.org.uk

Stay connected, stay curious!

West Waddy Archadia (WWA) pledges support to the Housing LIN with ongoing sponsorship

West Waddy Archadia

We are pleased to announce that West Waddy Archadia (WWA) continues its support of the Housing LIN through sponsorship of its Planning Homes and Communities for Older People webpages, a useful portal with information on planning applications for specialist housing for older people.

Jeremy Porteus, CEO at Housing LIN, said:

“We are delighted to have WWA on board. With the government’s Adult Social Care Reform White Paper setting aside £300m over 3 years to support local communities to better plan to deliver accommodation that meet the health and social care needs of their populations, WWA support will help ensure our dedicated portal continues to provide useful information on both planning strategically for and more technical aspects of specialist housing for older people."

Over a fifth of those living in Extra Care Housing have dementia, a number that is likely to increase as the prevalence of dementia continues to go up and people are being diagnosed at a younger age. The DemECH project, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research School for Social Care Research, is exploring how Extra Care Housing can support people to live well with dementia. This blog shares an update from the DemECH project.

Together with the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), TLAP have been facilitating a CoP for commissioners looking to work with co-operatives and community businesses, bringing together nine councils with a shared ambition to move away from large scale ‘time and task’ home care.

In this report they share ideas and experience from phase one of the CoP, highlighting the conditions needed to support the development of these alternative care models.

This report commissioned by the LGA from the Housing LIN makes recommendations to government on how we can best meet the housing needs of people in later life, with relevant case studies demonstrating good practice by councils in addressing the challenge of an ageing population.

The report also identifies the benefits of achieving the right mix of housing for older people and the barriers currently facing delivery.

Lois Beech

"Last week I had the pleasure of visiting Home Group’s extra care housing scheme Watergate Court, a £14m development of 80-unit in Gateshead. I was blown away. It demonstrated the importance of good quality design in making places that are attractive and aspirational and encourage people to ‘right-size’. We will certainly be looking to make this into a Housing LIN case study for others to learn from!"
