HLINks - Catch up with the Housing LIN
Let's catch up!
Friday, 20 January 2023
Welcome to HLINks, our weekly e-bulletin which provides a round-up of the latest news, views, resources and events on housing with care matters, as well as #JeremyTalks - my overview of what caught my interest this week.
Exciting news! Yesterday registrations opened for this year's Housing LIN Summit. This week-long event takes place Monday, 27 February - Friday, 3 March 2023. We have an exciting programme for you, with ten 90mins sessions on a range of themes over the 5 days. Our thanks go out to our headline and affiliate sponsors and 40+ speakers for making this virtual Festival of Ideas possible.
In other news, on Monday the launch of the latest Inquiry report from the APPG on Housing and Care for Older People took place in the House of Lords, addressing shared ownership for an ageing population (SO-HAPPI). I was privileged to be on the Expert Panel for Making retirement living affordable: the role of shared ownership housing for older people and to be invited to say a few words at the Parliamentary launch.
To coincide with the Summit announcement, we published a new guest blog by Shakespeare Martineau's Louise Drew in which she highlights the misconceptions about retirement housing schemes.
And, with the official launch later today, HLIN Consultancy is pleased to publish a new Housing and Care: Good Practice guide. Commissioned by SW Councils and SW ADASS, it supports councils to plan for and deliver the range of housing and care options needed by older people and working age adults with care/support needs. We will feature this in greater detail in next week's HLINks.
Other things that caught my interest included:
- a new report by Look Ahead on young people who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
- Wednesday's Radio 4 You and Yours features Integrated Retirement Communities
- a new planning report on specialist housing for older people by the Retirement Housing Group
- a YouTube video by Richard Humphries for the forthcoming Archbishops' Reimagining Care Commission release
- a blog by the Centre for Ageing Better's CEO Carole Easton on planning for local 'downsizing'
- a reminder from Design for Homes that entries for the 2023 housing design awards close on 1 March
- British Geriatric Society publishes evidence on the benefits of hospital at home services
Lastly, next week sees the publication of the Archbishops' Commission on Reimagining Care. I will be in attendance and look forward to sharing its findings and recommendations with you. I also look forward to the HLIN Cymru Steering Group and the TAPPI Phase 2 Advisory Board meetings taking place next week.
Stay connected, stay curious!

People aged 65 and over account for over 40% of hospital admissions, occupy around two-thirds of hospital inpatient beds and are the most frequent users of health and social care services. That is why Housing LIN is proud to support the British Geriatrics Society's 'Protecting the rights of older people to health and social care' statement .

"My Home Matters is a self-reflective booklet that encourages thinking about what ‘home’ means to the person filling out the booklet – and the other kinds of feelings and ideas that are associated with people’s homes and the contents of their home. The booklet addresses the challenges of moving and encourages the reader to explore the important aspects of what comes to mind when moving.
I liked looking through this booklet as it’s interactive with the reader by default and encourages self-reflection, which allows the reader to determine their own meaning towards moving house and the associated themes. The booklet also contains further resources in each chapter which gives the reader some additional information related to assisting with their moving process."
