About the speakers:
Dr Adi Cooper (opens new window) OBE is a Visiting Professor at the University of Bedfordshire, Independent Chair of two Safeguarding Adults Boards in London and the Care and Health Improvement Adviser for London and safeguarding adults lead for the Local Government Association and Association of Directors of Adults Social Services. She is a Non-Executive Director of Social Work England. She works as a safeguarding consultant and has published books and articles on safeguarding adults. She is a qualified social worker, having worked in Adult Social Care for over 30 years, including as Director of Adult Social Services, Housing and Health.
Dr Jeff Farrar (opens new window) QPM is Chair of the Integrated Care Board for Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Prior to this he was the Chair of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, lead Non-Executive Director on the Welsh Government Board and Chairman of the Welsh Government Remunerations Committee. His executive career was in policing and after a 35-year career he reached the rank of Chief Constable. He has a BSc (Hons) from Portsmouth University, a Masters in Public Administration from Cardiff University, and a Doctorate in Social Policy from Bath University. The themes of his research have been homophobic hate crime; citizen centred models of service delivery; and the incentives and disincentives in cross sector collaborative working. He was awarded the Queens Police Medal in the 2014 birthday honours list, and in 2016 was the winner of Institute of Directors, Director of the Year for the Public Sector in Wales.
Laura Bennett (opens new window) is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol with a longstanding interest in adult social care, informed by her previous experience in health and social care research at The King’s Fund and working in the NHS.
Ailsa Cameron (opens new window) is a professor of health and social care at the University of Bristol with a longstanding interest in the integration of services, particularly housing, adult social care and health.
Dr Jill Powell (opens new window) is an experienced qualitative and quantitative researcher, currently working at the University of Bristol’s School for Policy Studies. Jill’s research spans both policy, third sector and academic contexts and covers a variety of topics. These include the health and wellbeing of adults with learning disabilities and unpaid family carers, improving mental health in secondary schools and inclusion of older people living in care environments. Jill is currently doing a post-doctoral fellowship funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, School of Social Care Research (NIHR SSCR).
Beth Tarleton (opens new window) is a senior lecturer at the University of Bristol and Kate Precious is a Research Associate at the University of Bristol. Gillian MacIntyre is a senior lecturer in social work at the University of Strathclyde. Beth and Gillian have researched support for parents with learning disabilities for many years.
Dr Alex Vickery (opens new window) is a Senior Research Associate in the School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol, undertaking a post-doctoral fellowship funded by the NIHR SSCR that explores older men’s mental health and emotional wellbeing and their use of community support groups. Alex has previously worked on projects exploring diversity and inclusion in care environments and older men’s loneliness and isolation.
Dr Karen West (opens new window) is a Professor of Social Policy and Ageing with an interest in an interest in collaborative forms of housing and care. Karen is a social gerontologist and has extensive experience of research on care and housing and, more recently, collaborative housing.
