Housing for Older People

Following the previous government's announcement in April 2023 of the establishment of an Older People’s Housing Taskforce (opens new window) to investigate how to boost the supply of housing for an ageing population, these curated pages offer a selection of useful resources that provide information about a range of designated housing for older people, including sheltered/retirement housing, almshouses, intergenerational housing, cohousing and downsizing. The new government has now released the Older People’s Housing Taskforce report. It makes a number of wide-ranging recommendations which, if applied, will provide a greater range of mainstream and specialist housing choices for an ageing population and neighbourhoods for later living.

There are several options older people may wish to consider if their home is no longer as suitable for them as it once was or if they’re looking for an alternative housing solution to meet their needs/lifestyle choices in later life.
