Welcome to #JeremyTalks and this week's HLINks. 

First, wishing all those celebrating a very Happy Diwali, which also coincided with a new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak MP.

This week our HAPPI Hour threw the light on the proposed redevelopment of Newcastle General Hospital and plans by the University of Newcastle to create a Campus for Ageing and Vitality (CAV).

On the publication front, we published a new blog by Nick Henley in which he sets out the need to accelerate cohousing developments. We also feature a new University of Stirling INVITE project report with Stonewater Housing Association on how technology could best support retired residents, and a second report by ILC-UK on making the high street dementia-friendly. 

Care & Repair Cymru’s report on their home from hospital scheme also caught my interest. And Stop Press: with supported housing in the spotlight, the Government have also published their Exempt Accommodation Inquiry report!

In other news, I attended the King's College London DELONELINESS Advisory Group on loneliness in ageing population tackled through smart clothing and furniture. Interested? Get involved! And our Communications Officer, Sally and I caught up with Golden Lane Housing to discuss better housing choices for people with a learning disability or autism.

This week we were pleased to host Design for Homes (the organiser of the National Housing Design Awards) and the 2022 HAPPI award winner, Levitt Bernstein architects, at our Tuesday's HAPPI Hour on 'A green and grey AGEnda'. This looked at key features of sustainable housing for older people and the planned development of a passivhaus extra care housing scheme for Westminster City Council and for Community Gateway Association in Preston. We had tremendous feedback and you can watch the session again here.

In other news, I spoke at Abbeyfield's regional event in Wigan and joined the Amar Bari, Amar Jibon research team with Bangla Housing Association and The Open University present at Dunhill Medical Trust's round-up of projects funded through their 'Suitable Living Environments' funding programme. I also attended a 'Digital and Technology-Enabled Care Services - where we are and where next?' hosted by the Centre for Care at the University of Sheffield and an Everon technology 'myth busting' webinar. There will be a follow White Paper coming out of Everon's meeting - watch this space! 

And lastly, the Housing LIN Future Leaders cohort are meeting in person for the first time this afternoon in Birmingham. I look forward to reporting back on this next week along with showcasing a new report by the University of Stirling's and Stonewater Housing Association on the INVITE project, the focus of a HAPPI Hour session earlier this month.

What another full on week for the Housing LIN! We were delighted to be joined by Lord Best in Tuesday's HAPPI Hour webinar reflecting on 'What creates healthy cities? We heard from the Commission's author and two urban health projects funded by the UKRI's Healthy Ageing Challenge. On the publication front, we issued the following resources:

• a new #InspirationalAchievement titled, Tunstall Healthcare and Beyond Housing. 
   
• report published by the Almshouse Association about the impact of Covid on the movement.  

In other news, we promoted a blog by TSA's Chief Executive, Alyson Scurfield, on the TAPPI project aims. We also drew attention to Mental Health Awareness Day.

Throughout the week, I co-judged the CIH's Housing Design Awards (ceremony on 25 November in Manchester) and attended two events in person, chairing a session on 'Designing cities for older people' on the 2nd day of the SALUS' Healthy City Design conference in London followed by presenting at Abbeyfield's regional event in York.

This week we were delighted to support Housing Diversity Day 2022, an opportunity to share your experiences and journey with equality, diversity and inclusion in the sector. 

Today, we see the official launch and publication of a new East of England ADASS report, Putting people at the heart of new housing development: Coproducing the place we call home. I was delighted to be invited to be part of the advisory group and we look forward to featuring the findings in an upcoming HAPPI Hour session on 1 November.

This week we were pleased to announce that West Waddy Archadia (WWA) continues its support of the Housing LIN through sponsorship of its Planning Homes and Communities for Older People webpages.

On Tuesday, we published a new report commissioned by LGA and written by Ian Copeman and Lois Beech from the Housing LIN on how councils are planning, developing and delivering a range of housing opportunities and options to meet the needs of an ageing population.

I was also pleased to attend Wednesday's joint event by TSA, West Midlands ADASS, Housing LIN and TLAP in Birmingham. A key message echoed by all speakers was that houses are ‘fixed’ places, but people’s lives change all the time; housing needs to be inclusive, accessible and adaptable. As my first in-person event in a long time, it was delightful to see the networking unfolding in a room full of passionate individuals. See what I said over on Twitter! 

On Saturday 1st October, we celebrate International Day for Older Persons by sharing a case study and blog post by Maria Brenton, Senior Cohousing Ambassador at UK Cohousing, on the UK’s first senior cohousing community, High Barnet.

Celebrating #AccessibleHomesWeek, we drew attention to a range of Accessible Design resources that show how good design can maintain health and wellbeing and help people adapt to changes that may be due to aging.

We were pleased to publish a new guest blog by Tunstall Healthcare's Corporate Sales Director, Sarah Watts revealing how telecare is leading a retirement revolution. 

And, continuing the telecare theme, we hosted our first HAPPI Hour webinar of the Autumn / Winter series. Looking at the sectors readiness for the digital switch, we were joined by Tim Barclay, CEO at Appello, Steve Sadler, Head of Tech Strategy at TSA & Dr Kate Hamblin, Research Fellow at the Centre for International Research on Care, Labour and Equalities at Sheffield University. We are also delighted that Carlton Dene, Westminster City Council’s flagship extra care scheme, took home the HAPPI Award at the Housing Design Awards. We look forward to featuring the winning entry in association with Levitt Bernstein at our forthcoming HAPPI Hour webinar.

This week, we drew attention to a breifing paper published in partnership with Appello, one of the UK’s leading technology enabled care service (TECS) providers, that paints an alarming picture for how the sector is reacting to the requirement to upgrade services.

On Wednesday, we celebrated this year's Scottish Housing Day. To coincide, the Chartered Institute of Housing Scotland published a report that sets out the case for new, more ambitious cross-tenure housing standards but also notes the need for government to have a key role in funding these new higher standards.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Our thoughts are with The King and the Royal Family at this time. 

This week, we announced the six successful TAPPI testbeds. Bield Housing & Care, Haringey Council, Platform Housing Group, Pobl Group, Southend Care and Wiltshire Council will each receive between £65k - £75k in funding so they can involve their older residents in shaping new digital services. We are excited to work alongside each housing provider to improve the way technology is used in housing and care for older people through ten practical principles.

It's quieter on the news front this week so I'll take the opportunity to highlight some slight presentational changes. We now provide a more 'bitesize' round-up of new resources. While we will still highlight latest policy announcements, reports, case studies, etc, we encourage you to visit our news webpage where there will be a fuller account on key news items we've covered.

This week we published a refresh of the Housing LIN factsheet on Interior Design (No34). Updated and written by Lori Pinkerton-Rolet, director of Park Grove Design, the factsheet was officially launched on Tuesday's HAPPI Hour with Motionspot's Ed Warner. The webinar recording and a copy of the presentation slides are now available here.

And hot off the press, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities have just published their response to consultation on raising accessibility standards for new homes. Read our response here. 

In other news, I am pleased to have been invited to be a judge on Inside Housing's UK Housing Awards . These prestigious awards are in their 26th year and have a number of categories including 'Best older people's landlord', celebrating a landlord who has played a vital part in providing housing and support to older people. Winners to be announced on Friday, 25 November 2022 at a lunchtime ceremony in Manchester.
